7 Action Steps to Spiff-Up Your 2019 LinkedIn Profile!

I love LinkedIn. It’s that simple. When I owned TeamWILD Athletics, I discovered that many of my clients found us through my involvement on LinkedIn. That was a big revelation.

Then as someone who loves networking, I discovered that checking out people I’d met at an event on LinkedIn was a great way to cement in my head who they were and what some of their career path had been. And then I discovered I could, before meeting people, look at their LinkedIn profile, and have things to ask them about.

In short, I fell in love with the magic of LinkedIn.

Now it’s 2019, and the world is spinning fast, and it’s still January, and setting goals is still in the air. To get your profile tuned up, or spiffed up as I like to say, here are 7 Action Steps for you!

Action Step 1: Make sure you’ve personalized your LinkedIn URL

When you are on your profile page on a computer (not on mobile) on the right hand corner you will see a tab that says “Edit Public Profile and URL.” Click that and a new page will open. You will see a spot on the right hand upper corner that says “Personalize the URL for your profile” click the little pencil and get rid of the dash between your first and last name and get rid of the many numbers after your name. Hopefully no one else has your name. If they do, you might have to add your middle initial or get a bit creative. Then hit save. Now you have a personalized URL and that’s classy.

Action Step 2: Have a background photo/image that matches your current professional brand

Many people just don’t have a background image. This is a huge loss. Take a moment and think about what you want to visually convey to people looking at your profile. Then find an image and put it up. If you are a bit media savvy, consider creating a background image using Canva.com, a wonderful, free resource.

Action Step 3: Make sure you have a few things in the Accomplishments section

This is a section that often gets overlooked. If you don’t have anything in this section, first add it. Then think about all that you’ve accomplished. I suggest you take a look at the Accomplishment section of people you’re connected to, for ideas. In short, a full Accomplishment section conveys, well, accomplishment!

Action Step 4: Be sure you list a website or two or three in your Contact info

In this internet connected world, listing a website or three in your Contact Info sends the message that you are connected. And that’s good. Very good.

Action Step 5: Update your description of what you did in 2018 in your current Experience

Take a few minutes to think about all the things you’ve accomplished in 2018 and update your current position. I’m giving you permission to brag a bit. People want to know what you do when you’re at work. If you can, tell a bit of a story about what you accomplished in 2018. For example, list any new initiatives or campaigns. Make a strong effort to quantify examples of results that you got.

Action Step 6: Make sure you have an updated Call-To-Action in your About section

Who do you want to be connected to? Why are you on LinkedIn? Make it clear what you want people to do as a result of looking at your profile.

Action Step 7: Have fun and post an Article or make a Post every now and then!

It doesn’t take long to post an Article or make a Post on LinkedIn. Be sure your Article connects to your brand and what you want out of being on LinkedIn. Before long, you will make some new connections and create a following. Make what you post relevant and tag a few people in your post and for sure use related hashtags. #LinkedIn

There you go! I hope you have a good time spiffing up your LinkedIn profile for 2019.
